Bitget has announced plans to acquire GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Thailand), a licensed digital asset exchange and brokerage based in Bangkok, as it seeks to establish a stronger presence in Thailand as part of its Southeast Asian expansion.
The proposed deal would give Bitget, which describes itself as the world’s largest Universal Exchange (UEX), access to an existing local business. Its operational experience and knowledge of the Thai market would inform Bitget’s expansion plans.
Transaction remains subject to regulatory approval
Bitget intends to pursue the acquisition through its interest in BTGT Management (Thailand) Ltd., according to the company’s announcement.
Under the proposed arrangement, GMO Internet, Inc., its consolidated subsidiary GMO-Z.com Holdings (Thailand) Co., Ltd., and other shareholders will transfer their entire shareholding in GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Thailand) to BTGT Management (Thailand) Ltd. or an entity it designates.
The transfer will take place upon completion of the transaction. However, the sale and purchase agreement remains subject to applicable regulatory approval and other conditions.
That means the planned acquisition has not yet been completed, and Bitget’s intended local operations depend on the necessary approvals.
Local experience sits at the centre of the strategy
The Bangkok-based company already operates a licensed digital asset exchange and brokerage, providing an established local business that Bitget hopes to build upon.
Bitget sees that operating experience and understanding of the market as important to developing a lasting presence in Thailand.
“Building a presence in a market requires local expertise, an understanding of the regulatory environment and a long-term commitment to the market,” said Gracy Chen, CEO of Bitget.
Thailand is an important part of Southeast Asia's digital asset landscape, and this acquisition gives us a great opportunity to establish local operations in a thriving country. Our priority is to develop the right operational foundation while bringing Bitget's global experience and capabilities to the market.
Platform launch depends on completion of the deal
The planned purchase forms part of Bitget’s broader assessment of expansion opportunities across Southeast Asia, where demand for digital financial services is developing alongside changing regulatory frameworks.
Rather than relying solely on its existing global capabilities, Bitget says it wants to establish local operating businesses that can respond to the requirements of individual markets and support long-term participation.
In Thailand, its immediate objective is to establish a locally operated exchange using GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Thailand)’s market knowledge and operational experience.
Following completion of the acquisition and the required approval for a change of control, Bitget intends to bring its trading platform to Thai users.
The company plans to combine its global trading capabilities with the acquired business’s local expertise, while operating under applicable Thai regulations. The rollout therefore remains conditional on the transaction closing and the necessary regulatory clearance.
